Assoc. Dr. Zafer Gemici is a professional who has continued his work in both academia and industry for many years. After graduating from Istanbul Technical University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, he obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees from the same department. He began his career in the Research and Development Department of Arçelik, one of the world’s leading home appliance manufacturers. During his tenure there, he gained significant experience in R&D engineering and specialized in thermal and fluid systems, heating and cooling techniques, and dynamic system modeling. Over his five-year stint in Arçelik’s R&D Department, he served as an R&D specialist and project manager, performing impressively in a range of technical areas. After leaving Arçelik to complete his military service, he joined the R&D department of Dizayn Grup—one of the leading pipe manufacturers—in 2001, swiftly rising to the position of R&D Manager. In 2007, Assoc. Dr. Gemici spearheaded the transformation of Dizayn Grup’s R&D department into Mir Araştırma ve Geliştirme A.Ş., an original R&D company, where he served as R&D Coordinator. Throughout his time at Mir Araştırma ve Geliştirme A.Ş., he held various roles, including R&D Coordinator, Deputy General Manager, and General Manager, demonstrating versatility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment. With 22 years of experience in the private sector, Assoc. Dr. Gemici joined academia full-time in September 2018. After being appointed as a faculty member at Yıldız Technical University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, he also assumed the role of Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In addition, driven by his passion for innovation and technology management, he completed a non-thesis master’s program in International Innovation, Technology, and R&D Management at Warwick University in 2013. Meanwhile, he served on the Board of Directors of Istanbul University’s Teknopark A.Ş. and was a founding board member of ACQUEAU—a sub-cluster of the EU’s EUREKA program, focused on “Water and Water Management.” Alongside his expertise in mechanical engineering, he has also specialized in business management, technology management, project management, intellectual property management, innovation management, venture capital, and product development. Since October 2024, Assoc. Dr. Zafer Gemici has continued to serve as a Board Member of YTÜ Yıldız Teknopark. He is married and has one daughter.
